Tooth Extraction

There are many reasons why you may need to have a tooth extracted. Whether you need to have your wisdom teeth removed, have a diseased or damaged tooth, or even overcrowding, tooth extraction may be the best option to resolve your problem. Most tooth extractions can be done under local anesthesia; however, some wisdom teeth extractions may require heavier sedation, particularly in the case of severe impaction.

Overcrowding

Overcrowding is often why people need to remove their wisdom teeth. When there is not enough room in your mouth for all of your teeth, they can become crowded and crooked. Overcrowding can lead to difficulty cleaning your teeth, eventually leading to decay and infection. Tooth extraction may be recommended to create more space in your mouth.

Damaged or diseased teeth

Sometimes, a tooth may be too damaged to be repaired. Damaged tooth can result from severe decay, fracture, or infection. In these cases, extraction may be the best option to protect your other teeth and maintain your oral health.

When is a tooth beyond repair?

Your dentist will examine your tooth and take x-rays to determine if it can be saved or if extraction is the best option. In some cases, a root canal may be able to save a damaged or diseased tooth. However, extraction may be the only option if the damage is excessive.
